Elongated Figures

Described by Sarah J Downing in The Big Issue as “etiolated, as if they subsumed the pedestals they were placed upon,” Emerson’s tall, elongated figures exude both fragility and power. Drawing upon archetypes old and new — from Artemis to the modern supermodel — her subjects become mythic presences suspended between reverence and fantasy. Through intricate costume, theatrical lighting, and carefully constructed props, Emerson transforms her models into otherworldly icons.

Her process blends photography, painting with boundary pushing printmaking techniques, often incorporating unusual textured materials to blur the line between surface and substance. These works challenge notions of beauty and objectification, celebrating artifice and illusion while embracing the romantic and the sublime. Emerson’s figures inhabit a liminal space, both statuesque and spectral, inviting the viewer to question where reality ends and imagination begins.
